  • NPP’s voter turnout dropped significantly in key regions like Ahafo and Greater Accra.
  • Tamale North MP Suhuyini blames poor governance for provoking widespread discontent
  • NDC’s victory is seen as a call to action, with high expectations from Ghanaians

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections to low voter turnout among party members.

“One of the key reasons this result is as it is, according to the data, is that our people didn’t turn out to vote, and that is the fact,” he said on Newsfile, Saturday, December 14.

Citing figures from key regions, Miracles Aboagye highlighted the significant drop in NPP votes:

  • Ahafo Region: NPP votes fell from 145,000 in 2020 to 113,000 in 2024, while the NDC climbed from 116,000 to 130,000.
  • Greater Accra: NPP votes plunged from 1,253,179 in 2020 to just 681,000 in 2024, nearly half of their previous tally.

Meanwhile, Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini argued that the NPP’s defeat was also a result of poor governance, which provoked widespread discontent among Ghanaians.

Speaking on The Big Issue, Suhuyini said, “Yes, the NPP was abysmal in government. Their style of leadership in many instances provoked people, and I am sure it is that provocation that has manifested in the endorsement that the NDC got.”

He further urged the NDC to view their victory as a call to action rather than a cause for celebration. “The funfair should be over by now. We need to understand the level of responsibility placed on His Excellency the President’s shoulders and, by extension, the NDC,” Suhuyini added.

The defeat has sparked debates on what went wrong for the NPP and the expectations for the new NDC government.
