Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has promised to bring much-needed reform to Ghana’s sports sector if appointed Youth and Sports Minister in a potential John Mahama administration.

Vanderpuye, who previously held the position in 2016, expressed his confidence in his ability to address the challenges plaguing the sector and make it more transparent.

In an interview with Joy Sports, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of Ghanaian sports under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

“If I become the Minister of Sports in 2025, I will sanitize the Sports. I am not happy with the things going on,” he stated.

Vanderpuye criticized the influence of individuals exploiting the sport for personal gain, often at the expense of players and investors. He emphasized the need for bold steps to protect the integrity of the game. “Football will not grow unless we ensure that the people who play the game and invest in it benefit, not those who treat footballers like commodities.”

A former footballer himself, Vanderpuye vowed to safeguard athletes from exploitation and create a thriving sports environment. “I will fight against anyone who seeks to exploit any sportsman,” he declared. His remarks come amid growing dissatisfaction with the current sports management, including the poor performance of the Black Stars in recent international tournaments.
