Minority Slams Gov’t Over Public Sector Sackings, Calls for Reversal

Opposition MPs demand reversal of job terminations, while Majority defends decision, citing reckless recruitment

Story Highlights
  • Dismissals have left many young recruits jobless and uncertain about their future
  • Majority claims Akufo-Addo’s administration overloaded the public sector with political appointees
  • Minority urges President Mahama to intervene and reinstate affected workers

The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to reverse its decision to revoke appointments of individuals recruited into the public service after December 7, 2024.

Expressing concern over the distress caused by the move, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin highlighted that many young recruits have already lost their jobs, leaving them uncertain about their future.

Speaking in Parliament, he urged President Mahama to intervene, emphasizing that recruitment is a process, not an event, and that affected individuals should not be unfairly dismissed.

However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga rejected the plea, accusing the previous Akufo-Addo administration of reckless recruitment. He argued that the move was politically motivated, with many appointees being party loyalists and family members. Ayariga maintained that the new government should not be burdened with an overloaded public sector, insisting that the hiring process lacked transparency.

The debate continues as affected recruits await a resolution to their employment crisis.
