Gov’t Moves to Legalize ‘Okada’ Operations: 13-Member Committee to Review Ban
Move aims to amend road traffic regulations and create more job opportunities for the youth.

The Ministry of Transport has established a 13-member inter-agency committee to assess the Road Traffic Regulations 2021 (L.I. 2180), specifically focusing on the ban on the use of motorcycles, commonly known as “okada,” for commercial purposes.
According to Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the committee has a three-week timeline to complete its work.
The review is part of the Mahama government’s broader plan to legalize commercial motorcycle operations, aiming to provide more employment opportunities for the youth.
Speaking at the committee’s inauguration on Tuesday, March 18, Mr. Nikpe emphasized the government’s intention to create a legal framework that supports the use of motorcycles and tricycles for commercial activities while ensuring public safety.
“We are committed to legalizing the use of motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes. We want to gather all relevant ideas and suggestions within three weeks to facilitate the amendment of L.I. 2180, creating opportunities for young people seeking to earn a living through this enterprise,” he stated.
