Gov’t Eyes Partnerships for National Airline – Transport Minister Reveals

Minister reveals plans to partner with investors for a sustainable national carrier.

Story Highlights
  • The government acknowledges the challenges in funding the airline independently
  • A shortlist of potential partners will be announced soon to help bring the national airline back to life
  • Ghana has been without a national carrier since 2010

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced that the government is actively seeking partners to help establish a national airline, acknowledging the financial constraints posed by the current economic climate.

During a discussion with the staff of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Nikpe revealed that the government is finalizing a shortlist of potential partners to make this dream a reality.

He stated, “Given the current state of the economy, it’s not feasible for us to launch a national airline on our own. We’re exploring partnerships, and this process will take time as we carefully choose who to collaborate with to ensure the long-term success of a national carrier.”

Ghana has been without a national carrier for almost 20 years after the suspension of operations due to a U.S. ban linked to financial debts. Ghana Airways, which operated from 1958 until 2004, was succeeded by Ghana International Airlines, which also ceased operations in 2010.

The push to revive a national airline gained momentum in 2022 when Ashanti Airlines was selected to partner with the government, sparking renewed hope for the return of a rebranded ‘Ghana Airlines.’
