Government Deploys Drones and Military to Tackle Walewale Highway Robberies

Heightened security measures aim to curb armed attacks on passenger buses amid spillover effects of the Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

In response to a series of armed attacks on passenger buses along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway, the government has deployed military personnel and drones to enhance security.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed the measures in Parliament on March 18, 2025, following concerns raised by the Member of Parliament for Walewale about increasing robberies and vehicle burnings in the North East Region.

Despite a drop in armed robbery cases from 30 in 2022 to 18 in 2024, bus attacks remain a significant concern, attributed to the spillover effects of the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

To address the situation, a curfew was imposed on February 15, 2025, alongside reinforcements from Tamale and the establishment of three police bases in Wale Wale, Janga, and Gombiliga.

Though no arrests have been made this year, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak expressed hope that drone surveillance and increased police presence will curb the attacks.
