Afari Duodu, known as ‘Bulgaria’ and regarded as a walking encyclopedia of Ghanaian politics, history, and statistics, has made controversial remarks warning disabled individuals against voting for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming general election.
His statement comes in reaction to comments made by Dela Edem, a member of John Mahama’s campaign team, who claimed on TV ZXY, an NDC-affiliated station, that former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s wheelchair confinement is a consequence of his “evil deeds” as a leader.
Edem allegedly remarked: “We all saw your bad governance, so don’t think we have forgotten. Your evil deeds have now kept you in the wheelchair.”
Speaking on the Ghana ‘Se Sen‘ Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio, Bulgaria criticized Edem’s comments and accused the NDC of consistently disrespecting and disregarding people with disabilities. He urged fellow disabled individuals to reject John Mahama and the NDC at the polls.
“The NDC doesn’t have a good mindset towards disabled people. This isn’t just about Edem; this attitude has existed for years. If you are disabled and you vote for them, God will punish you. They even gather in Mahama’s house to practice insulting disabled people,” Bulgaria alleged.
He further pointed out that former President Kufuor enacted the Disability Act (Act 715), emphasizing that such legislation was a mark of respect for the disabled community.
In response to Edem’s remarks, Bulgaria retorted: “If Kufuor’s current condition is due to his ‘evil deeds,’ then what about Rawlings, who passed away? Did his evil deeds kill him? Rawlings inflicted suffering on prominent people and subjected women to cruel treatment, yet he died at 73. Meanwhile, Kufuor will celebrate his 86th birthday this December.”
