Fake ECG Staffer Arrested After Defrauding Customers in Central Region

A 38-year-old Isaac Akwasi Agyei has been charged in the Assin Fosu District Court in the Central Region for impersonating a staff member of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and defrauding customers.
Agyei was apprehended on August 30, 2024, by local police after targeting vulnerable customers in rural areas such as Assin Kwafokrom and Assin Appiahkrom.
Clad in ECG uniforms, he demanded payments of GH¢50 from customers with debts exceeding GH¢200, threatening disconnection if they refused. In some cases, he even removed service wires from meters and accepted alternative payments.
His deception came to light when suspicious victims reported him to the Assembly Member, prompting his arrest.
Agyei first appeared in court on September 17 and was later charged with three counts of defrauding by false pretenses, to which he pleaded not guilty.
He was granted bail under specific conditions.
John Kwame Danso, one of the complainants, expressed his determination to see the trial through to ensure justice is served.
The local Assembly Member, Hon. Robert Aidoo Amissah, called for public vigilance against such fraudsters and requested a fair trial for Agyei to deter future impersonators.
The case has been adjourned until November 27, 2024, after a recent hearing presided over by His Worship Abdul Majeed Illiassu
. ECG’s General Manager for the Central Region, Emmanuel Lumor, has urged customers to remain alert to prevent falling victim to similar scams.
