Peace Council urges stakeholders to take action to prevent violence ahead of the December 7 elections
- Nine constituencies in Central Region flagged as election hotspots
- Peace Council urges Ghanaians, especially youth, to promote tolerance and reject vote-buying
- Security agencies on high alert to address potential violence in key areas before, during, and after the election
Ahead of the December 7 election, the National Peace Council (NPC) has flagged nine constituencies in the Central Region as potential hotspots for unrest.
These constituencies include Awutu-Senya-East, Effutu, Agona-West, Assin-North, Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, Cape Coast-North, Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira, and Upper-Denkyira-West and East.
The Awutu Senya-East Constituency (Kasoa) stands out with 42 identified flashpoints, making it the most critical area in a region typically known for its tranquility.
The findings were shared by the Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Right Reverend Richardson Aboagye Andam, during the Ghana First Youth Symposium at the University of Cape Coast. The event, organized by Youth Vision International, focused on promoting youth empowerment, with support from the Peace Council.
Aboagye Andam reassured the public that, with the help of stakeholders, efforts are underway to ensure peaceful elections. Security agencies are actively monitoring the identified areas to respond to any signs of violence.
He appealed to Ghanaians, especially the youth, to embrace tolerance, respect differing opinions, and avoid the corrupt practices of vote-buying and selling. Such actions, he stressed, undermine democratic values and hinder national progress.
Madam Araba Aikins from the National Commission for Civic Education also encouraged political youth activists to respect electoral regulations and avoid exploitation by politicians seeking narrow gains.
Mr. Richard Ohene-Kwashie of Vision Youth International reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to youth empowerment and the importance of maintaining peace for the country’s stability.
