The Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), in partnership with national security, has successfully arrested a driver and a mate in Old Akrade, Asuogyaman district, for attempting to smuggle cocoa beans.
According to a national security source, the task force received a tip-off around midnight about individuals transporting cocoa beans to Togo.
Following surveillance, they discovered an astonishing 100 bags of cocoa beans hidden beneath a load of chippings in a tipper truck with registration number GN-1773-24.
The source characterized the operation as a significant move against the rising trend of cocoa smuggling in the country, highlighting authorities’ commitment to protecting Ghana’s cocoa industry and curbing illegal trading activities aimed at exporting cocoa across the border to Togo.
“With heavy security presence from the military and immigration at the two toll booths on the Adomi Bridge, we suspected they might have used a ferry to cross the lake at Senchi, proceeding through Juapong to their intended destination,” the official noted.
