Chaos in Keta: Armed Men Demolish MCE’s Private Building on Controversial Reclaimed Land

Unidentified Attackers Tear Down MCE’s Property Amid Ongoing Dispute Over Land Meant for Stadium Development

Story Highlights
  • Unidentified men demolished MCE Emmanuel Gemegah's private building and a local fence on Keta reclaimed land
  • The attack occurred amid accusations that the MCE illegally built on land reserved for a stadium
  • Police intervention stopped further destruction after a series of protests over the land’s use

Unidentified individuals demolished the private building of the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Emmanuel Gemegah, on Sunday morning, December 29, 2024, amidst ongoing disputes over the management of the reclaimed land in Keta.

The MCE had been accused of using land designated for a stadium to construct a private residence.

The attackers, who were armed, arrived at the site near Emancipation Beach in Adzido-Aflasco at around 9 a.m., accompanied by two bulldozers. They not only partially destroyed the MCE’s storey building but also demolished a fence surrounding the property of a local resident, Rocky Amugi.

The police intervened to halt further damage to the building. This incident follows similar protests by local youth in October 2024, who had previously marked the MCE’s building with a ‘Stop Work’ notice, arguing that the construction was illegal on the land designated for the stadium. Despite warnings and an ongoing case in the High Court at Sogakope, the construction had continued.

Public protests in the area have intensified, with residents seeking to prevent the MCE from allocating the reclaimed land for private developments.
