Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has expressed his heartfelt condolences following the passing of Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) 2024 presidential candidate.
In a poignant Facebook post, Bawumia recognized Madam Donkor’s significant role in strengthening Ghana’s democracy. He offered his sympathies to her family and the GFP, stating, “I write to commiserate with the family and political party of Madam Akua Donkor, who until her death was the 2024 presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party. She played her part in consolidating our democracy. May the soul of Madam Akua Donkor rest in peace.”
Madam Donkor was among the 13 candidates approved by the Electoral Commission (EC) to run in the upcoming presidential elections on December 7, 2024.
She sadly passed away on October 28, 2024, after a brief illness.
In response, the EC has halted the printing of ballot papers and given the GFP a 10-day deadline to nominate a new candidate.
