Bawku: Youth Set Fire to Majority Leader’s Home as Violence Escalates

Tensions in Bawku reached a boiling point on Thursday, April 10, 2025, as unidentified youth reportedly set parts of Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga’s residence ablaze.

The arson attack comes on the heels of violent confrontations tied to Bawku’s protracted chieftaincy dispute. The situation worsened after a deadly clash on Wednesday between youth groups and law enforcement left one person dead and several injured.

Security officials confirmed that the military has now moved in, securing key areas and taking control to deter further violence.

According to eyewitness accounts, the recent chaos erupted when youth from one faction allegedly forced market women from a rival group to leave the area, sparking a confrontation with police that quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

In addition to Ayariga’s residence, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s home and other police properties were also torched in the violence.

With heavy military presence now surrounding the MP’s home and increased patrols across the town, the atmosphere remains volatile as authorities strive to restore order.
