Bawku Conflict: Death Toll Reaches 21 as One More Person is Killed
Violence reignites following the return of a controversial chief, leading to renewed fears in the community.
- Recent clashes have resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries
- Alhaji Seidu Abagre's return has exacerbated existing tensions in the area
- Authorities have enacted a curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm to restore order
Violence has erupted once again in Bawku, claiming yet another life and pushing the death toll to 21.
On Saturday, November 2, a commercial driver known as Maadi was attacked while traveling to Bolgatanga, his vehicle reduced to ashes amid the chaos.
This latest incident follows the controversial return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since February 2023 due to legal troubles surrounding his installation as chief in Nalerigu.
A recent High Court ruling lifted the arrest warrant against him, paving the way for his return on October 26.
His arrival has reignited a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, leading to gunfire that has already claimed two lives and left several injured.
The community now grapples with heightened tensions and fears of further violence.
In response, authorities have imposed a strict curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, with security forces actively working to restore order.
