President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s newly elected Commonwealth Secretary-General, for enhancing the nation’s international reputation and legacy.
During a welcoming ceremony following her participation in the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, the President lauded her achievements and promised full support as she steps into this distinguished role.
“She has performed admirably as foreign secretary and as chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, along with many other significant international duties,” he remarked.
“It’s wonderful to see so many of you here to congratulate her upon her return. We must unite and support her to excel in her new position. She is now representing Ghana on the global stage in a way not seen since our esteemed diplomat, Kofi Annan.”
President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to come together in support of her, emphasizing the chance for Ghana to make a substantial impact worldwide.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s election as the first African woman to lead the Commonwealth marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s diplomatic presence. She will officially take office on April 1, 2025, succeeding Patricia Scotland.
