The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is raising concerns over a sharp increase in fire outbreaks this festive season, urging the public to exercise greater caution to prevent further incidents.
In the past week alone, more than 100 fires have been reported, with the majority linked to domestic fires and bush burning. Public Relations Officer Alex King Nartey highlighted that negligence regarding fire safety is contributing significantly to this alarming rise.
Nartey said, “We recorded over 100 fires just before Christmas, with 44 fires on Friday, 38 on Saturday, and 53 on Sunday—just three days before Christmas. The most affected regions were Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti.”
As people travel to visit families during the holidays, the GNFS is calling on households and communities to stay vigilant. They urge the public to avoid leaving open flames near flammable materials and to ensure electrical appliances are turned off when not in use.
The service added that while public awareness campaigns on fire safety are showing some positive results, there is still significant room for improvement in adherence to fire safety measures.
With the festive season ongoing, the GNFS stresses that collective efforts are vital to preventing further outbreaks and ensuring a safe and fire-free holiday season for all.
