Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assumed full responsibility for the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the vetting of ministerial nominees last week.

Addressing Parliament on February 4, 2025, the Effutu MP expressed regret over the disruptions, which sparked public concern.

He appealed to Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconsider his decision and its repercussions, marking a shift from the Minority’s earlier position that the Speaker acted beyond the Standing Orders of the House.

“Mr. Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side, for all actions that took place. I, therefore, conclude by inviting you, Mr. Speaker, to, in the circumstance and with assurance given, consider rescinding the decision you communicated to the House, as well as all consequential matters thereto,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Majority Leader also called for a more reconciliatory approach in resolving the aftermath of the heated session, which led to the Speaker establishing a special committee to investigate the incident.

In a related development, four MPs—two from each side, including the chief whips Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh—were suspended following the disturbances. Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib were also affected by the suspension.
