Lawyers representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), also known as Chairman Wontumi, have stated that they are still awaiting formal notification from the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) regarding the reported freezing of his bank accounts.

Recent media reports suggested that the FIC had frozen all accounts associated with Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining, due to alleged financial irregularities.

The freeze is said to have been carried out under Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), which grants the FIC the authority to restrict access to financial accounts when there is suspicion of illicit activity.

Responding to the claims, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, told Citi News that they had yet to receive any official communication either from the FIC or the involved banks.

He clarified, “We only received this information from my client. The instruction was that the FIC had sent an order to freeze his account. We are still waiting to be formally served the appropriate documents before we can proceed with our defense.”

Appiah-Kubi also confirmed that legal steps are being taken to challenge the reported revocation of Akonta Mining’s lease in court. “We are preparing the necessary legal documents and will file them either this afternoon or by Friday, April 25,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi’s mining operations have been under increasing public scrutiny, with calls for more transparency and accountability in the mining sector.
