Free SHS Not Akufo-Addo’s Idea – NDC Convenor Asserts
Sylvestin Ronald criticizes NPP's proposed credit scoring scheme, highlights NDC's plans to enhance Free SHS and support traders with a Women’s Bank
- NDC pledges to retain and improve the Free SHS policy
- The party plans to eliminate the double-track system to ensure better learning conditions
- Students will have more time in school to focus on their education
Antwi Sylvestin Ronald, Convenor of United Voices for Change, has criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging they lack a clear policy agenda for the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko, Sylvestin Ronald dismissed the proposed credit scoring policy championed by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing it as a mere loan scheme rather than a genuine policy. He urged residents of the Ashanti Region not to support this initiative or vote for the NPP.
Highlighting the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s plans, he announced that the party intends to establish a Women’s Bank to empower traders and expand their businesses. He also reassured Ghanaians that the NDC would not cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy but would eliminate the “obnoxious” double-track system to improve its effectiveness.
“The NDC will not cancel Free SHS but will enhance it by removing the double-track system, ensuring students have ample time to study in school,” he stated.
Sylvestin Ronald further argued that the Free SHS initiative was not an original idea of President Akufo-Addo but one rooted in Ghana’s historical policies dating back to Kwame Nkrumah’s era.
He said that the framers of the 1992 Constitution are the true architects of the policy, which has so far benefited 3.2 million children, contrary to the 5.7 million figure touted by the government.
