Nigerian actor Richard Mofe Damijo, widely known as RMD, has expressed his support for John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging Ghanaians to give him another opportunity to lead the country.
In an interview with Doreen Avio on the red carpet at the 2024 EMY Awards in Accra, RMD spoke candidly about his belief in Mahama’s potential as President.
He advised voters to choose a candidate who prioritizes the interests of Ghanaians above all else.
“I think they shouldn’t make the mistake that Africans sometimes make. They should vote for the best man, the one who has their back. Not many people on the ballot can say they truly have your back, but I believe Ghanaians know who that person is,” RMD stated.
He openly expressed his personal preference, saying, “I like Mahama,” adding that he believes Mahama has made significant contributions to the country.
When asked if he was personally acquainted with Mahama, RMD revealed that they had never met. However, he acknowledged Mahama’s impact on the country, particularly noting his role in improving Ghana’s infrastructure, including the construction of the airport. “I have never met him, but I know that he did a lot of work, especially at the airport, and many Ghanaians have spoken highly of his contributions. I think Ghanaians should give him another chance and see how far it goes,” RMD said.
Ghana will head to the polls on December 7, 2024, to elect a new President and Members of Parliament. John Dramani Mahama, who served as Ghana’s President from 2013 to 2017, is seeking a return to office after losing his bid for re-election in 2020.
Other presidential contenders include Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia (New Patriotic Party), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen (Movement for Change), and several independent candidates and smaller party representatives.
