The Ayensuano District Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Asuboi has been engulfed in flames, allegedly set by unidentified individuals, destroying electoral materials and devices from the recent parliamentary elections in the constituency.
The motive for the arson remains unknown. However, the incident occurred shortly after a protest by a group called the Ayensuano Concerned Youth, who voiced their dissatisfaction with the declaration of Ida Adwoa Asiedu as the Member of Parliament-elect.
Mante Gyebi, the group’s spokesperson, condemned the act and denied any involvement, stating the protest was peaceful and intended to communicate their grievances. Gyebi also issued a five-hour ultimatum during the demonstration, urging President-elect John Dramani Mahama to address their concerns.
Eyewitness accounts revealed suspicious activity near the EC office before the fire broke out, with smoke reported shortly after a man was seen lurking by a window. Authorities have heightened security and launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine their motives.
Meanwhile, Yabuku Amudu, the NDC Chairman for Ayensuano Constituency, expressed dismay over the incident and dismissed accusations that party sympathizers were involved.
