Tempers Flare: Afenyo-Markin Slams Ahiafor for ‘Rude’ Conduct During Vetting Clash

Disagreements over procedural fairness delay Roads and Highways minister-designate’s vetting, escalating into heated accusations.

Story Highlights
  • The vetting of minister-designate Kwame Governs Agbodza was delayed for nearly two hours due to procedural disagreement
  • Afenyo-Markin accused Chairman Ahiafor and the Minority caucus of bad faith and rude conduct
  • Despite a brief suspension and an apology from Afenyo-Markin, tensions continued to mar the proceedings

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced strong disapproval of Chairman Bernard Ahiafor’s handling of the Appointments Committee session, accusing him of bad faith and rudeness during a heated exchange.

The clash unfolded as Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about addressing the appointments of Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors, a move the Majority deemed outside the purview of the vetting process.

Tensions peaked during the delayed vetting of Kwame Governs Agbodza, the minister-designate for Roads and Highways. Originally scheduled for 10:00 AM, the session was yet to commence as of 11:54 AM due to disagreements. A five-minute suspension intended to resolve the impasse failed to ease hostilities.

Afenyo-Markin accused Ahiafor of resuming proceedings without informing all Minority members, despite prior discussions.

“Chairman, don’t raise your voice. You suspended sitting for five minutes and assured me you would wait. Then the session started without us. This isn’t what we agreed on. Your conduct has been rude and unacceptable.”

After objections were raised, Afenyo-Markin later apologized for his outburst, though tensions remained palpable.
