The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning to its supporters, urging them to avoid seizing or damaging government properties, even if they believe such assets were misused by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The warning comes after reports of incidents where individuals believed to be affiliated with the NDC have unlawfully taken over or destroyed state property.
In a statement released on December 11, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, called for calm and urged party supporters to adhere to lawful conduct.
He emphasized that any suspected instances of theft or mismanagement of government assets should be reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation.
Gbande particularly addressed the party’s youth organizers, as well as regional and constituency executives, urging them to play a central role in preventing such actions.
He stressed the importance of respecting the rule of law during the transition period, advising that government officials from the NPP should not be harassed or obstructed in their duties until the transition process is completed.
“NPP officials found in possession of government assets should be reported to the police. They must provide a legitimate reason for their possession, or the police should impound the assets until further investigation,” Gbande stated.
He added, “Government appointees and NPP officials working with or in possession of government assets should not be disturbed until the transition is over. A government is still in power, and these officials should be allowed to carry out their responsibilities until the new government assumes office, regardless of their party affiliation.”
Gbande also cautioned against unauthorized entry into government offices or premises, emphasizing that no one should invade functioning government property, disrupt business operations, or cause disturbances until the transition is concluded.
“Any government assets, especially consumables, fixtures, or relief items, should not be seized without proper reporting to the police, as this would amount to theft,” he said.
Additionally, Gbande called on party supporters to report any post-election recruitment activities by government agencies to constituency and regional chairpersons, who would then take appropriate measures and report the matter to the transition team for further action.
