SIM Card Re-registration Goes Digital in June – Sam George Announces

New online registration system to streamline process and improve efficiency for citizens

Story Highlights
  • Citizens can register SIM cards online
  • Automatic verification of information ensures quicker and more accurate registration
  • The initiative aims to strengthen national security

The upcoming SIM card re-registration process, set for June, promises to eliminate long queues by introducing a digital registration system.

This new approach, designed to streamline the process, aims to make the experience quicker and more convenient for citizens.

Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation Minister Sam Nartey George shared the news during a visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on April 8, 2025.

He explained that citizens will be able to register their SIM cards online, minimizing the need for in-person visits to registration centers. The system will automatically verify citizen information, speeding up the process and reducing manual errors.

This digital transformation is set to save time, increase accuracy, and enhance the overall registration experience for Ghanaians.

The SIM card re-registration initiative began in 2021, with the government extending deadlines multiple times due to low participation rates. The registration requires all SIM card users to link their cards with their Ghana Card, the national ID.

Despite efforts, millions of SIM cards remained unregistered, leading to multiple deadline extensions. This raised concerns over data security and the risk of fraudulent registrations via the mobile app.

The government’s ultimate goal is to enhance national security, reduce mobile-related crimes, and ensure proper industry regulation by maintaining accurate data on registered SIM cards.
