Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir (K.T.) Hammond has expressed fierce criticism of the Speaker of Parliament’s recent decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, claiming that Alban Bagbin has overstepped his authority.

K.T. Hammond insists that this issue should have been referred to the Supreme Court for clarification.

In a recent interview, he described the Speaker’s ruling as both legally and constitutionally flawed, stating, “Constitutionally and legally, the Speaker is completely out of order; he is entirely wrong on this ruling.”

The Speaker’s declaration, which shifts the numerical advantage to the NDC, affects three members from the now-Minority party and one from the opposition.

The lawmakers impacted include Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah from Amenfi Central, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah from Fomena, Kojo Asante of Suhum, and Cynthia Morrison of Agona West.

Hammond criticized the Speaker for fostering discord throughout the 8th Parliament, suggesting that this latest ruling will exacerbate tensions and disrupt parliamentary proceedings. He remarked, “Look at the chaos that the Speaker has introduced… and look at how he is climaxing it.”

The Minister cautioned that this decision could paralyze government operations, as the former Majority, now the Minority, has pledged to boycott parliamentary activities. “Who is going to do government business? The whole country is going to come to a standstill because we are not going to sit as Minority and do anything,” he concluded.
