  • The Supreme Court temporarily reinstated the contested seats
  • The Minority caucus recently took control of the Majority side

Speaker Alban Bagbin has called Parliament to reconvene on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre.

This session aims to address pressing issues that have been on hold for weeks.

The decision to reconvene comes after a prolonged deadlock sparked by the Speaker’s declaration of vacant seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West. This ruling faced intense backlash from the Majority caucus, who argued it jeopardized their representation.

Complicating matters, the Supreme Court intervened, placing a stay on the Speaker’s decision after Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a writ, temporarily restoring the disputed seats and underscoring the growing rift between the Majority and Minority factions.

Tensions escalated when the Speaker adjourned a session after the Minority gained control of the Majority side, utilizing their numerical advantage.

This unprecedented situation raised alarms about the Parliament’s functionality and the urgency for a resolution.

In light of the ongoing stalemate, the Majority has called for this recall, stressing the need to resume legislative activities to ensure vital policies and programs move forward without delay.
