More than 12 soldiers lost their lives on Tuesday during coordinated attacks by Boko Haram on a military base in Kareto, a remote town in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, according to local and military sources.
The terrorists launched their assault using improvised explosive devices and firearms, targeting the base from multiple directions, eyewitnesses reported.
Following a prolonged gunfight with troops, the militants returned hours later to resume the attack, causing additional casualties, including civilian injuries.
The attacks followed a recent Boko Haram raid that had already claimed the lives of several soldiers.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum extended condolences to the armed forces and the families of the victims, urging strength and resilience during this time of loss.
Nigeria continues to battle the insurgency that has plagued the nation for 14 years, resulting in over 100,000 deaths and the displacement of three million people, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.
