After stellar performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper secures his place as Ghana’s No.1, overtaking Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has officially confirmed Benjamin Asare as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, following his outstanding displays in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper impressed in Ghana’s recent victories over Chad and Madagascar, keeping two consecutive clean sheets.

Asare, 32, earned his debut call-up for the qualifiers and made an immediate impact, overtaking Lawrence Ati-Zigi as the preferred option between the posts.

Speaking to 3Sports, Addo commended Asare’s dedication and performance, emphasizing that he has secured his spot as Ghana’s No.1.

“I think the next game is in June, and he is already the number one. We made that decision for him. He trained very well. We have a good atmosphere where the keepers are pushing each other,” Addo stated.

The coach also praised Ati-Zigi and Joseph Wollacott for their professionalism and support in fostering healthy competition within the squad.

Asare played a crucial role in Ghana’s dominant 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and maintained his place in the 3-0 triumph against Madagascar in Morocco. With these results, the Black Stars lead Group I and will shift their focus to their next qualifiers in September, facing Chad away before hosting Mali.
