- OSP declares Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive for failing to appear for questioning
- Lawyers argue he’s outside Ghana undergoing medical tests and treatments
- Assures OSP of full cooperation once he returns to the country
Lawyers representing Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta have responded to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) after the former Finance Minister was officially declared a fugitive and placed on the wanted list.
The OSP is pursuing Ofori-Atta in connection with several investigations, including the loss reduction contract between ECG and Beijing Jao, procurement over the National Cathedral, Health Ministry contracts with Service Ghana Auto Limited/Ambulances, and the SML-GRA deal.
In a press briefing held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng disclosed that Ofori-Atta had repeatedly failed to honor invitations for questioning, prompting the OSP to take legal action. “Consequently, the OSP declares Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta a wanted person. He is a fugitive from the law,” Agyebeng announced.
Responding through a letter, Ofori-Atta’s lawyers explained that their client is currently outside Ghana for medical reasons. They stated that the OSP’s letter, dated January 24, 2025, had been left at Ofori-Atta’s security post while he was away.
“Our client gave notice to the former Chief of Staff in early January and more recently to the current Chief of Staff of his trip outside the country on medical grounds. Our client is currently undergoing medical observation and tests… and will notify your office of his return to Ghana to reschedule the meeting,” the letter outlined.
The lawyers also expressed their willingness to provide the OSP with any necessary information while Ofori-Atta remains abroad, reaffirming their commitment to cooperation in the investigation.
As the legal battle unfolds, public scrutiny intensifies over whether the former Finance Minister will return to face the allegations.
