Kennedy Agyapong, a former presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has allegedly withdrawn from the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour following a violent incident in Bantama, Kumasi, where a supporter of his was stabbed.
The victim, a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was injured during a scuffle on April 29, 2025.
The event took a dark turn when a confrontation broke out over money distributed to some students after the rally. Eyewitnesses claimed that armed men attempted to seize the funds, sparking a violent altercation.
Kwesi Kwarteng, former Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, confirmed the incident on Facebook, cryptically commenting with the Akan proverb “Oman bo adwo,” which translates as “the nation is now okay or satisfied.”
Reports suggest the chaos began inside an auditorium where NPP officials were addressing attendees.
After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, a student group was approached by armed individuals who allegedly tried to take the cash by force. Gunshots were reportedly fired into the air during the chaos, and one student was stabbed in the rib during the melee.
Witnesses recounted that the attackers spoke in Hausa and only returned GH¢200 when confronted, which was deemed insufficient.
Tensions escalated when one assailant brandished a weapon before eventually stabbing a student as the group tried to flee.
The injured student was first taken to Suntreso Hospital and later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed he was in stable condition after undergoing a minor surgical procedure.
