The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has dismissed allegations of a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to discuss the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
On October 17, Speaker Bagbin announced that the Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West seats were vacant, a decision currently on hold by the Supreme Court for further review.
In response to rampant speculation, Parliament released a statement on October 22, clarifying that a video circulating on social media, which purportedly shows Speaker Bagbin meeting with the President, is misleading.
The footage was taken during the presentation of the inaugural Democracy Cup to the President and is unrelated to the parliamentary matter at hand.
The Speaker’s office urged the public to cease sharing false information, asserting that no negotiations regarding the vacant seats have occurred between the Speaker and the President.
“Parliament has noted a video circulating on social media suggesting that Speaker Bagbin was invited for talks with the President regarding the vacant parliamentary seats. We categorically state that this claim is utterly false. The video in question was recorded on July 4, 2024, during the Democracy Cup presentation.”
The statement condemned the manipulation of the video, describing it as an unfortunate attempt to undermine the integrity of the Speaker and Parliament.
It further advised the public to disregard the misleading narrative and treat it with the disdain it deserves.
