Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed deep disappointment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for not intervening in his prolonged legal battle.

In an interview, Nyantakyi revealed his expectation that the party would halt the court proceedings related to corruption allegations stemming from the “Number 12” exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Nyantakyi, who contested the NPP parliamentary primaries in the Ejisu constituency, disclosed that his legal challenges were a matter of concern within the party, but no action was taken.

“When I was actively seeking to contest, this issue was discussed within the party. I had hoped that if I ran, the NPP would have withdrawn the court case,” Nyantakyi lamented.

The former GFA president, facing charges of fraud and corruption for five years, emphasized the emotional and financial toll the case has exacted on him.

“I haven’t misappropriated any government funds, I haven’t harmed anyone, yet I find myself in court,” Nyantakyi stated.

Both Nyantakyi and his co-accused, former Northern Regional GFA boss Abdulai Alhassan, have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case, adjourned until October 16, 2024, awaits a decision on an appeal at the Court of Appeal before High Court proceedings can resume.

What Lies Ahead for Nyantakyi

Nyantakyi’s public critique of the NPP reflects his disillusionment with what he perceives as the party’s lack of support for its members during challenging times.

With his legal battles ongoing, Nyantakyi faces a decision on whether to remain with the NPP, hoping for future support, or to explore alternative options, potentially aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he seeks assistance in clearing his name.
