On Monday, December 9, 2024, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa officially declared the results of Ghana’s 2024 Presidential Election, announcing John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the President-elect.
Speaking at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Accra, Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, confirmed that Mr. Mahama secured a decisive victory with 6,382,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.
His closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
Other candidates in the race included:
- Nana Kwame Bediako (New Force Movement) – 84,478 votes (0.75%)
- Alan Kyerematen (Movement for Change) – 31,202 votes (0.28%)
- Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana) – 16,072 votes (0.09%)
- Nana Akosua Sarpong (CPP) – 23,397 votes (0.21%)

“Ladies and gentlemen, I have the singular honor as the Returning Officer of the 2024 Presidential Election to declare His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the winner and President-elect of Ghana with a total percentage of 56.55%. Congratulations, sir. It is finished,” she declared.
Jean Mensa commended the voters for their participation and reaffirmed the Electoral Commission’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusivity throughout the electoral process.
“The voters of Ghana have spoken, and their choice has been upheld by the Electoral Commission. We have conducted elections that are credible, fair, transparent, and peaceful,” she stated.
Reflecting on the journey, she added, “With the help of God, we have fulfilled our aspiration to embed transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and responsiveness at the heart of our operations.”
Jean Mensa emphasized the significance of voter participation, highlighting the election as a reflection of the people’s will. “These elections have ensured that every vote counts. As a country, we take pride in the sanctity of the voter’s choice, a principle we have upheld since 1992.”
