Story Highlights
  • Ghana misses AFCON for the first time since 2004 after a 1-1 draw with Angola
  • Jordan Ayew’s 35-yard free kick and Manaf Nurudeen’s penalty save were highlights
  • Defensive lapse in the second half allowed Angola’s equalizer

Ghana’s Black Stars have failed to secure a spot at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004, following a 1-1 draw against Angola in Luanda.

Coach Otto Addo made significant changes to the lineup, including debut starts for Nations FC defender Razak Simpson and Michael Baidoo. Goalkeeper Abdul Manaf Nurudeen also made his competitive debut, replacing Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Jordan Ayew gave Ghana an early lead with a spectacular 35-yard free-kick in the 19th minute after Mohammed Kudus was fouled. Despite the initial advantage, Angola equalized in the second half when Zini, left unmarked, slotted in Milson’s cross.

The Black Stars had opportunities to regain the lead, but Angola’s defense and goalkeeping proved impenetrable. Nurudeen’s heroic penalty save in the first half and a last-minute stop prevented further damage, but it wasn’t enough to secure the needed result.

Ghana will conclude their qualifiers against Niger on Monday in Accra, but the outcome will no longer impact their AFCON dreams.
