Suame MP, John Darko, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Kumasi’s new Mayor, offering his support for the Mayor’s passionate efforts to clean up the city, but also urging a more balanced approach to his methods.

In an interview on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Darko praised the Mayor’s strong determination to restore order and cleanliness in Kumasi, particularly in the aftermath of his ambitious plans to clear unauthorized structures and street vendors.

“Our city is in dire need of help,” Darko stated. “The Mayor’s goal to clean the city is a noble one, and I agree that we need to improve the state of our city. However, I believe his approach may have been overly zealous. I’m confident he will receive the guidance needed. While I don’t know him personally, I believe his drive is ultimately good for Kumasi.”

Despite facing criticism for his aggressive tactics, including allegations of using excessive force to remove hawkers from the streets, Darko emphasized the importance of law enforcement, while firmly rejecting any form of brutality.

“Flogging is not the answer, but we need to enforce the Local Government Act and Assembly regulations,” Darko asserted. “We must ensure that the Mayor is able to fulfill his mandate within the confines of the law.”

The Suame MP also advocated for a non-partisan approach to city management, calling for public support of mayors to ensure that urban development is not hindered by political influences.

“Let’s depoliticize urban management and allow mayors to work freely, bringing order and sanity to our cities,” Darko added.

These remarks come amid ongoing debates regarding the Mayor’s leadership style, with some applauding his decisiveness, while others express concerns over potential human rights violations.
