On January 24, 2025, the Minister of Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, conducted an inspection of the Tema Harbour to assess the situation of approximately 2,500 containers left uncleared by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
These containers, filled with essential materials for energy projects, have been sitting at the port, incurring substantial demurrage fees that have now accumulated to a staggering GHS 1.5 billion.
This inspection highlights the Minister’s focus on addressing inefficiencies within the energy sector and ensuring more responsible use of national resources.
The uncleared containers, which were purchased under the previous administration, have been causing significant delays in crucial energy initiatives while adding a severe financial strain on the country’s budget.
Hon. Jinapor expressed his deep concern over the situation, calling it “unacceptable.” He emphasized that it is vital to clear the containers as soon as possible to prevent further financial losses and to keep the momentum of ongoing energy projects intact.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of better coordination between agencies and improved resource management to avoid such situations in the future.
He reassured the public that measures would be taken to ensure that such inefficiencies are not repeated, aiming for a more streamlined and accountable approach to managing public resources, which is crucial for Ghana’s continued development.
The inspection tour serves as a reminder of the pressing need for better operational efficiency and accountability in managing critical infrastructure and resources, especially in key sectors like energy.
