Empowering Her Future: Gov’t Launches Free Sanitary Pad Drive for Schoolgirls

A transformative step toward ending period poverty and keeping girls in school year-round

Story Highlights
  • Free sanitary pads distributed to schoolgirls to support menstrual hygiene and reduce absenteeism
  • Initiative aims to promote gender equality and improve educational outcomes for girls
  • Launched in Accra with support from government leaders

The government has launched the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative, a nationwide programme designed to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, promoting both their health and educational continuity.

Unveiled in Accra on Thursday, April 24, the launch brought together government ministers, education leaders, policymakers, and school representatives, highlighting the broad support for this essential intervention.

This initiative is a key part of President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to gender equality and universal access to quality education. Recognising that menstruation-related challenges can be a major barrier to girls’ education, President Mahama previously spotlighted the issue in his maiden State of the Nation Address, calling for practical solutions to support girls during their periods.

By supplying sanitary pads at no cost, the programme aims to ease the financial strain on families, boost school attendance among girls, and promote their general well-being.

It also fosters a more inclusive and equitable school environment, where no girl has to miss class due to lack of menstrual hygiene products.

Stakeholders believe the initiative will play a crucial role in improving retention rates among schoolgirls, closing the gender gap in education, and empowering the next generation of young women.
