Kane Injured as Bayern Fight Back to Draw 1-1 with Dortmund

- Harry Kane was forced off with an injury as Bayern Munich fought back to secure a 1-1 draw
- The visitors failed to trouble Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel significantly in the first half
- Frankfurt could reduce that lead to four points if they win at Heidenheim on Sunday
Harry Kane was forced off with an injury as Bayern Munich fought back to secure a 1-1 draw away at Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens had put them ahead with a brilliant solo goal in the first half, threatening to hand Vincent Kompany’s side their first Bundesliga defeat of the season. However, Jamal Musiala’s equalizer in the 85th minute ensured Bayern maintained their unbeaten run.
The game, which had been relatively quiet in the opening half, came to life when Nico Schlotterbeck’s pass down the left found Gittens on the halfway line.
The England Under-21 international then raced past Bayern right-back Konrad Laimer, cut into the penalty area, and fired a powerful left-footed shot past Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give Dortmund the lead.
Gittens’ strike in the 27th minute made him only the second Englishman to score in this fixture, after Kane, who had netted a hat-trick in the corresponding match last season.
Bayern’s first half was further disrupted when Kane, the Bundesliga’s top scorer and England captain, was forced to leave the field just before halftime. He signaled for a substitution and appeared to be limping, though his injury was not the result of a challenge.
The visitors failed to trouble Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel significantly in the first half, but came alive after the break. Thomas Muller, who replaced Kane, had a great opportunity to equalize shortly after the restart. He was set up by Musiala, but his effort was thwarted by an outstretched save from Kobel.
Musiala, who had earlier come close with a long-range shot, finally leveled the score when he headed in a cross from substitute Michael Olise. The Germany international’s sixth goal in 10 Bundesliga appearances this season preserved Bayern’s unbeaten domestic record.
The draw kept Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga, seven points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen. Frankfurt could reduce that lead to four points if they win at Heidenheim on Sunday. Dortmund’s point lifted them to fifth place, above Freiburg on goal difference.
Kane ‘Not That Bad,’ Says Kompany
After the match, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany played down concerns over Kane’s injury. The England striker, who has featured in all 12 of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches this season, expressed hope that the injury wouldn’t be serious but acknowledged he could be a doubt for Tuesday’s German Cup last-16 clash against defending champions Leverkusen.
“Harry said it wasn’t that bad, but he’ll need to undergo a scan,” Kompany confirmed. “Tuesday’s match will be very tight for him — I don’t know many players who can recover that quickly, but we’ll see.”
Kompany also stressed the importance of Kane’s goals but reassured that the team had faith in the entire squad. Kane has contributed 19 goals and assists in the Bundesliga this season, more than any other player.
