In response to the devastating East Legon accident that claimed the lives of two teenage girls, actor and politician John Setor Dumelo expressed his condolences and called for urgent changes.
Speaking at the farewell service for one of the victims, Justine Mary-Ann Enyonam Agbenu, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra, Dumelo highlighted the profound sorrow felt by the bereaved families.
“This is an unfortunate incident, and my heart goes out to the family,” he stated, emphasizing the emotional impact on parents everywhere. Dumelo underscored the need for a discussion on responsible parenting, acknowledging that while children may stray, it is crucial for parents to maintain guidance and discipline.
As he campaigns for the Ayawaso West Wuogun parliamentary seat with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dumelo pointed out the lack of speed ramps on Mensah Wood Avenue, the site of the tragic accident. He advocated for the installation of more speed bumps throughout East Legon and the country to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
“I believe that if there had been speed ramps there, this accident might have been avoided,” he said.
The tragic event occurred on October 12, when a Jaguar driven by Elrad Salifu Amoako, the 16-year-old son of a prominent church leader, collided with an Acura carrying Justine and her friend Maame Dwomoh Boaten, leading to a catastrophic fire. The case is currently in court, with the parents of the driver facing charges for allowing an unlicensed person to operate the vehicle.
Dumelo expressed his desire for justice, affirming that “the law must take its course,” while refraining from commenting on the driver’s father’s statement that his son did not intend to harm the girls.
