A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Thailand and Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread panic and the collapse of a high-rise under construction in Bangkok.

At least two people have been confirmed dead, while 43 remain missing in the rubble.

The midday quake, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock, sent thousands fleeing into the streets, with dramatic footage showing a crane crashing to the ground as the multi-story building near Chatuchak market crumbled.

Rescue efforts are underway, with emergency responders racing against time to locate survivors. Seven people have been pulled out alive, but authorities fear the death toll could rise.

The tremors caused gridlock, power outages, and evacuations across the Thai capital, home to 17 million people. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with buildings swaying, alarms blaring, and water cascading from rooftop pools.

The quake’s epicenter was in Myanmar, where damage was reported in Mandalay and Yangon. In China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, homes were damaged, and injuries were reported.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called an emergency meeting to assess the situation as the city remains on high alert for aftershocks.
