  • Alan plans to abolish import duties on spare parts within two years

Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change and a 2024 presidential aspirant, has introduced the “Fa Dada Begye Fofro” policy, translating to “Exchange the old for a new one.”

This transformative initiative aims to revolutionize Ghana’s transport industry by making vehicle ownership easier and more affordable for drivers and transport operators.

During a campaign tour in the Eastern Region, Kyerematen explained the plan to transport union leaders. It will enable drivers to exchange old vehicles for brand-new, locally assembled ones on a “work-and-pay” basis. The approach eliminates the need for upfront payments or loans from banks, easing the financial burden on drivers.

“This policy provides a path for drivers to own modern vehicles while boosting our local automobile industry,” Kyerematen stated. The locally assembled vehicles will not only enhance transport standards but also stimulate domestic manufacturing and create jobs.

Key Features of the Policy:

  • Vehicle Exchange Program: Old vehicles will be traded in for new ones, payable through a work-and-pay system.
  • Abolition of Import Duties on Spare Parts: Within two years, Kyerematen promises to remove import duties on spare parts, reducing operational costs for drivers and mechanics.
  • Support for Local Manufacturing: Plans to produce vehicle components locally will further create jobs and enhance economic growth.
  • Standardized Lorry Parks Nationwide: New lorry parks integrated with major markets will streamline operations and improve safety for drivers and traders.

Transport leaders praised the policy as a groundbreaking solution. “This is the relief we’ve been hoping for,” said Kwasi Nyarkoh, a union leader. Others highlighted how the measures address long-standing challenges in the sector.

By blending immediate benefits with a vision for industrial growth, Kyerematen’s policy underscores his dedication to the transport sector, a vital part of Ghana’s economy. His bold initiatives are resonating strongly with stakeholders, positioning him as a leader with practical solutions for the nation’s challenges.
