“Africa’s Growth Depends on Embracing Digitalization” – Bawumia
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia urges African leaders to adopt digitalization as a key driver for economic transformation and global competitiveness.

- Africa must leverage digitalization to accelerate economic development
- Policymakers should adopt a forward-thinking, possibility-driven approach
- Digital transformation is crucial for job creation and long-term prosperity
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged African policymakers to adopt a forward-thinking approach and embrace technology as a catalyst for economic transformation.
Speaking at the 27th Annual Conference of Beyond Borders: A Myth or a Mandate for Africa’s Progress? at Harvard University in Boston, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the urgent need for digitalization to accelerate development across the continent.
“Policymakers must think with a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology, not fear it. If we put our minds to it, Africa can leapfrog advanced nations in various sectors,” he asserted.
Using Ghana as a case study, he noted the country’s historical reliance on an informal economy for over six decades post-independence but highlighted recent efforts to transition into a structured, data-driven system.
“Today, we are building a formal, database-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our task is to use digitalization to address current challenges while creating the foundation for future jobs,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks reinforce the need for Africa to harness technology-driven policies to spur economic growth, create jobs, and enhance global competitiveness.
