Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has hit back at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its criticism of a viral video involving acting Goldbod CEO Sammy Gyamfi gifting money to evangelist Nana Agradaa.
Mr. Gbande accused the NPP of hypocrisy, arguing that the party lacks the moral credibility to comment on matters relating to corruption.
“It doesn’t give anybody from the NPP the audacity to sit on TV and criticise this matter. They have no moral standing when it comes to corruption-related issues—they are the very face of corruption,” Gbande stated.
The video in question, filmed on Saturday, May 11, has sparked public debate and criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of Mr. Gyamfi’s gesture given his role and political affiliations.
While Gbande acknowledged the gesture was “poorly timed” and “inappropriate” in the current political context, he stressed that no law had been broken.
“I side with those Ghanaians who believe it should never have happened. Though it wasn’t illegal, it was ill-advised given Mr. Gyamfi’s position,” he conceded.
Gbande, who also serves as a presidential staffer, added that the NDC recognises public concern and accepts full responsibility.
“The act, while perhaps well-intentioned, was not well received. We acknowledge the public sentiment and join our colleague in offering a sincere apology. It won’t happen again—we are learning and evolving,” he concluded.
