Barcelona’s appeal for the precautionary registration of Dani Olmo for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season has been rejected, putting his availability for the club in doubt from January 1.
Olmo, 26, was signed from German side RB Leipzig in August for a reported €60 million (£51m). However, due to La Liga’s wage cap restrictions, the attacking midfielder was only registered to play for the first half of the season.
On Friday, La Liga welcomed a court ruling that denied Barcelona’s request to register Olmo for the full season. The court stated that the necessary conditions for an interim measure had not been met.
The ruling also emphasized that allowing additional spending in cases of long-term injury is intended to maintain competitiveness, not to register players whose salaries exceed the league’s financial limits—something the court argued Barcelona was attempting to do.
Barcelona had initially registered Olmo after a series of long-term injuries to key players, reallocating a portion of their wage cap to accommodate him. However, the temporary registration expires at the end of December, and the Commercial Court Number 10 of Barcelona rejected the club’s plea for provisional registration.
Reports suggest that Barcelona has filed an appeal with the magistrate court, with a hearing scheduled for Monday, just one day before the registration deadline.
La Liga confirmed that the decision to reject Olmo’s registration was initially made by its Budget Validation Body and upheld three times by its Financial Fair Play Committee, the Social Appeals Committee, and UEFA’s Second Instance Licensing Committee of the Spanish Football Federation.
Olmo, who was a youth player at Barcelona before moving to Dinamo Zagreb at the age of 16, has made a strong impact at the club this season, scoring six goals in 15 appearances. He also played a key role in Spain’s victory at the European Championship earlier this year.
Currently sitting third in La Liga, Barcelona are three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid as they continue their push for the title.
