Rey Misterio Sr., an icon in the world of professional wrestling, has passed away at the age of 66, his family announced on Friday morning.

The news was shared in a heartfelt Facebook post by his son, known as El Hijo De Rey Misterio Lopez. Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide also paid tribute via Instagram, stating, “We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”

Misterio, born Miguel Ángel López Días, was more than just a wrestler; he was a mentor and trainer to numerous international stars, including his nephew, WWE legend Rey Mysterio, and great-nephew Dominik Mysterio. His influence extended to other renowned wrestlers such as Halloween and Hayabusa.

Debuting in 1976, Misterio became a household name in promotions like Lucha Libre AAA, Pro Wrestling Revolution, and the World Wrestling Association. Over his illustrious career, he claimed multiple championships, including two reigns as IWC World Middleweight Champion.

Though he officially retired in 2009, Misterio continued to wrestle occasionally, with his final match taking place in April 2023. His legacy as a trailblazer in the industry remains unparalleled.

At the time of reporting, the cause of his death has not been disclosed.
