Ghana Drops to 77th in FIFA Rankings After AFCON Qualification Setback

The Black Stars of Ghana have slipped four places in the latest FIFA rankings, now sitting at 77th globally.

This decline follows a disappointing end to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign.

Previously ranked 73rd in October, Ghana remains 14th in Africa, behind strong teams such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt. The drop reflects the team’s poor performance in the qualifiers, where they managed just three points from six matches.

Ghana’s campaign concluded with a 1-1 draw against Angola and a shocking 2-1 home loss to Niger, leaving them at the bottom of Group F and out of contention for AFCON 2025. This marks a significant setback for one of Africa’s footballing powerhouses.

In contrast, Niger saw a boost in their ranking, jumping nine places to 122nd globally, further underscoring Ghana’s struggles this year.

Ghana’s highest FIFA ranking in 2024 was 67th, achieved in February. However, the team has steadily declined since then, culminating in their current 77th position. They remain ahead of Zambia and Gabon in Africa but trail behind countries like Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.

Looking forward, the Black Stars will focus on regrouping as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which begin in March. This presents an opportunity for the team to rebuild and restore their reputation on the international stage.

Meanwhile, Argentina leads the global rankings, followed by France, with Spain and England close behind in third and fourth. Brazil holds onto fifth place, with no changes in the top ten since July.

For Ghana, the priority is addressing the issues revealed during the AFCON qualifiers and setting the foundation for future success.
