A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, when a vehicle careened off the Dabaa-Akropong road, plunging into the Owabi River in the Ashanti region, resulting in five fatalities.
Among the deceased are the driver of the Opel saloon car, her two daughters, and two other passengers a plumber and a teacher from the Akropong Roman Catholic Basic School who were likely on their way to school, dressed in uniforms.
The Assemblyman for the area, Hon. Prince Agyei Owusu, shared his account with Kwame Tanko on the ‘Ghana Se Se Sen’ Morning Show on Lawson TV/radio.
”I received a distress call from my sister about the incident and subsequently contacted my fellow Assemblyman in Akropong, Hon. Andrews Kofi Nti, for assistance.”
He continued, ”Upon arriving at the scene, it was “disgusting and tragic.” Eyewitness accounts revealed that the car had veered off the road, summersaulting before sinking into the river, a woman was behind the wheel.”
He said four bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Hon. Agyei Owusu revealed that a four-year-old girl, Doreen Yassan, one of the five involved, is still missing in the river.
He stated that search efforts will continue today to find the four-year-old girl
Hon. Agyei Owusu shared that he visited the devastated family of the victims, noting their overwhelming grief.
“I visited the home of the man who lost his wife and children, and he was so overwhelmed that he couldn’t speak,” he said
“The Dabaa-Akropong area is in mourning; residents have lost their appetite,” he stated, reflecting on the collective sorrow.
“This is a disaster for us, and as Assemblyman, losing my people in this way is heartbreaking.”
In light of this tragedy, Hon. Agyei Owusu called for the construction of a metal bridge over the Owabi River to prevent future accidents.
