The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has issued a heartfelt plea for peace and unity among the residents of Bawku, urging them to resist the urge to politicise the ongoing conflict in the region.
In a media briefing on Tuesday, October 29, the minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to restoring peace in Bawku, an area recently marred by violence stemming from unresolved chieftaincy and ethnic tensions.
His statement follows a tragic incident on Sunday, October 27, when gunmen ambushed travellers along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers interrogated passengers about their identities before opening fire, further igniting fears within the community. Two vehicles were set ablaze during this brutal assault, highlighting the urgent need for peace and effective government intervention.
During his address, Asamoah Boateng reassured the residents that the government, through his ministry and partnerships with relevant agencies, is committed to addressing the security and chieftaincy challenges impartially.
He implored all parties involved to cease the circulation of conspiracy theories and blame games.
“I urge everyone to maintain calm and allow the government to manage these sensitive issues,” he stated. “It is crucial that we all work together towards lasting peace, and I will continue to engage with political leaders from all sides to foster collaboration in resolving these pressing problems.”
He also appealed to traditional leaders to act responsibly and avoid any actions that might exacerbate the situation. “I strongly call on both sides’ traditional leaders to refrain from escalating tensions,” he emphasized.
