- The statue’s unveiling sparked criticism, with calls for its removal if the NPP loses the upcoming elections
The statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, Western Region, which was vandalised on Monday, December 16, 2024, has now been fully repaired.
The Ghana Police Service, which launched an investigation into the act of defacement, confirmed the statue’s damage, showing a partially broken left leg. The assailant(s) also removed the plaque bearing the president’s name.
However, recent visuals shared by TV3 revealed the statue restored to its original condition, with the left leg free from cracks and the plaque reattached.
The vandalism comes on the heels of public backlash after the statue’s unveiling on November 6, 2024. Critics, including President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, accused President Akufo-Addo of self-glorification.
Many Sekondi residents expressed displeasure over the statue’s installation, citing concerns over the state of local infrastructure and promising to remove the statue should the NPP lose the December 7, 2024 elections
