The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the newly appointed flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), due to errors and irregularities found on his nomination form.
This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.
Although the GFP was given an opportunity to correct some discrepancies, Mensa stated that certain irregularities could not be overlooked, leading to the decision to disqualify Kubi from participating in the upcoming elections.
The GFP faced a significant challenge after the death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, on October 15, which left the party in search of a replacement for the December 2024 presidential election.
The EC had provided a 10-day window for the party to nominate a new candidate, resulting in Kubi’s selection.
However, upon reviewing Kubi’s documentation, the EC found several issues that extended beyond minor clerical errors.
Jean Mensa explained that while the party managed to rectify some of the identified mistakes, other aspects were considered “illegitimate” and could not be accepted under electoral law.
She stressed that the EC’s responsibility to maintain the integrity of the electoral process necessitates rejecting any irregularities, regardless of the party’s efforts to address them.
